A man has been killed as a dangerous thunderstorm struck Brisbane bringing nearly 200km/h wind gusts and heavy rain.

Queensland Police said a man was found unconscious near fallen power lines on Murarrie Road in Brisbane's east about 5pm.

The 30-year-old Murarrie man had suffered life-threatening injuries and was declared dead shortly after.

"This is an emerging situation and investigations are ongoing," police said.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

The Bureau of Meteorology earlier issued a severe thunderstorm warning for destructive winds, large hailstones and heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding.

It began near Sunnybank Hills and Archerfield where there were wind gusts up to 169km/h.

The thunderstorm tracked north-east towards Brisbane's CBD, Wynnum and Brisbane Airport before hitting Ormiston, Moreton Bay and Mud Island.

There was 53mm of rain recorded in just 30 minutes at Round Mountain.

Vision showed wind moving furniture outside residents' homes and several trees were felled by destructive winds.

One tree fell in Brookwater, destroying a car and narrowly avoiding a house and people.

Hail blanked front yards in Springfield as the sudden thunderstorm ripped through the city.

More than 14,000 have been left without power in the state's south east as a result of the storm.
