The New York Times has accused Microsoft and OpenAI of violating copyright in a lawsuit over using generative-AI technologies that might have a significant impact on the future of the news publishing industry.
The Times said, in a complaint that was filed on Wednesday that the tech companies had used its information without authorization to develop their AI products, such as Microsoft’s Copilot and OpenAI’s human-like chatbot ChatGPT. According to the lawsuit, the systems were trained on millions of pieces of Times content and utilise that data to provide responses to user instructions.
The Times is the first major American media outlet to file a copyright lawsuit against the firms.
Details to come later.
