Most areas in Australia's eastern states experienced a wet Christmas day and now severe thunderstorms are expected to return for similar areas this New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
The Bureau of Meteorology is expecting isolated thunderstorms to return for parts of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia this weekend.
"Severe thunderstorms will become more widespread from this weekend," Senior meteorologist Sarah Scully said.

"The focus areas will be north-east NSW, and south-east and central Queensland."
Here is what the bureau is predicting the weather will be in each capital city on December 31.
Brisbane, Queensland
Rain and thunderstorms are set to kick off New Year's Eve across the state with Brisbane expecting a top of 30 degrees.
"Severe thunderstorms are possible in Queensland between St Lawrence and Redcliffe, although activity will not be as widespread compared to previous days," Scully said.
"There are indications that isolated, very dangerous thunderstorms with destructive winds, giant hail and intense rainfall may be possible across southeast Queensland on Saturday.
Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Cairns should also be prepared for heatwave conditions.
"Extreme heatwave conditions are forecast for parts of northern Queensland, while in the west both Longreach and Julia Creek are forecast to reach 47 degrees this weekend."

Sydney, New South Wales
Sydneysiders can expect a cloudy New Year's Eve with the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) warning of a slight chance of an early shower.
Southeasterly wind gusts between 15 to 25km/h will also hit the city, turning easterly during the day.
The mercury in Sydney is set to reach a maximum of 24 degrees with a minimum of 19.
Melbourne, Victoria
Melburnians can expect a partly cloudy New Year's Eve with a 5 per cent chance of rain.
Celebrations could be hampered by wind gusts of up to 20 km/h.
Temperatures in Melbourne are set to hit a maximum of 21 degrees and a minimum of 13.
"Victoria is looking to be cool and cloudy," senior meteorologist for the Bureau of Meteorology, Johnathan How said earlier this week.
"For Melbourne it's looking quite cool and there may be some rain around."
Canberra, Australian Capital Territory
New Year's Eve in Canberra is set to be a cloudy one.
The capital faces a slight chance of showers and easterly winds of up to 20km/h.
Canberra is expected to reach 22 degrees and a chilly minimum of 11.
Adelaide, South Australia
Mostly sunny conditions are slated for Adelaide on Sunday.
New Year's Eve could also see moderate wind gusts between 15 to 20 km/h.
The temperature in Adelaide is set to reach a maximum of 26 and a minimum of 13.
"Isolated gusty thunderstorms are also possible over western South Australia," Scully said.

Perth, Western Australia
Hot and sunny conditions are in store for Perth on New Year's Eve.
There are easterly wind gusts between 15 to 20 km/h expected before shifting west to southwesterly 20 to 30 km/h gusts by morning.
New Year's Eve in Perth will reach a maximum of 30 degrees and a minimum of 19.
"In Western Australia, low to severe-intensity heatwave conditions extend through the Kimberley, eastern Pilbara and Interior districts, reaching extreme intensity in some areas," Scully said.
"Marble Bar is forecast to reach 49 degrees on Saturday and is expected to reach 45 degrees for the next six days."
Hobart, Tasmania
A partly cloudy New Year's Eve will see a 5 per cent chance of rain.
Northwesterly winds of 15 to 20 km/h are likely to shift southeasterly later in the day.
New Year's Eve in Tasmania will reach a maximum of 23 degrees and a minimum of 10.
Darwin, Northern Territory
The Top End will see a high chance of a shower or two, as well as possible storms on Sunday.
Rain is likely later in the day along with light winds and the chance of a thunderstorm.
The mercury will tip 35 degrees on New Year's Eve, with a minimum of 27.
"In the Northern Territory, low to severe-intensity heatwave conditions cover most areas," Scully said.
"Locally extreme heatwave levels are forecast around Darwin where warm minimums are leading to uncomfortable nights."
