A Queensland mother and father who were carjacked with their two young children in the back seat have shared their frightening ordeal as police hunt for the man responsible.

The man believed to be responsible pounced on the family as the father filled up his Nissan Pathfinder at the Pacific Petroleum fuel station in Beenleigh south of Brisbane.

It is understood the man pushed the mother out the passenger door and leapt into the driver's seat.

The couple was knocked over as the man sped off and CCTV footage captured the pair screaming.

"She was really distraught," the father said of the mother.

"She was losing her marbles a bit. I was just in shock more than anything else."

"I didn't know where to go from here."

The parents, who can't be identified for legal reasons, spent 15 minutes fearing the worst for their two-year-old boy and 10-month-old girl.

The father said he tried to jump in the car in an attempt to stop the man.

"And he just, from the force of the vehicle taking off, we both just fell to the ground," he said.

The couple's children were unharmed and dropped at a nearby Woolworths shortly after the car took off.

"All he could say to me pretty much was that you know, 'there was a bad man, and the bad man was angry'," the father said.

The man responsible was spotted driving erratically minutes later.

Police claim he attacked a woman and tried to steal her Mazda at a 7-Eleven across the road moments earlier.

She suffered some injuries during the alleged assault.

Police are looking for the man and investigating the incident.
