The Department of Foreign Affairs is urgently investigating reports of an Australian killed in an airstrike in southern Lebanon.

Sydney man Ibrahim Bazzi, 27, had travelled to the town of Bint Jbeil to visit his wife, Shorouk Hammoud, who recently acquired her Australian visa and was planning on moving to be with her husband.

The building was struck overnight by what's been reported by local media in Lebanon as an Israeli airstrike, killing them both.

9News has been unable to confirm whether the missile was fired by the Israel Defence Forces.

Multiple family members and friends told 9News they were informed early this morning and were devastated by the news.

Mr Bazzi moved to Australia in 2021 and was living in Bexley in the city's south with his sister and brother-in-law.

He was working as a labourer before he was promoted to site supervisor.

His brother-in-law will be travelling to Lebanon tonight to be with their family.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is urgently working to confirm the reports.

"The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is aware of reports an Australian citizen has died in Lebanon and is seeking confirmation," a spokesperson said.
