We might be getting tired of how long January is but we definitely can’t get enough of the new movies released this month and some from last year.
As we readjust to resuming back to the office, interacting with colleagues whose names and designations we may not remember anymore, delivering on work that we wish we could skip and delete while battling with the realization that adulthood still comes with a special kind of ‘Shege’ and our Detty December doings might end up bringing us financial woes, here are 5 movies to watch (new and old) that could help you relieve stress throughout the weekend.
The Stranger
This is an absolute fave, the reason being that I recently binge-watched this on Netflix a few days ago. It was suspense-filled and had quite an interesting storyline. At every juncture and at the end of every episode there was a cliff-hanger that would get you wanting to watch the next one with rapt attention.
I may have watched this on a work day, slept very late, and got my body telling me in the office how much it needed sleep, but I don’t regret it one bit, and here is a synopsis of the movie;
A thriller movie based on Harlan Coben’s novel – The Stranger. This series comes to life with the arrival of a stranger, whose private investigative background and nose for sniffing secrets from a mile away wreaks havoc on the residents of a small town.
“It follows Adam Price (the main character), who seems to be living the perfect life – two great sons, a watertight marriage – until a stranger approaches him at a bar and reveals a shocking secret about his wife, Corinne.” — Radio Times
Although The Stranger is a series, it is a limited series, and I just couldn’t help but add it here.
A Tribe Called Judah (ATCJ)
It is literally the billion-Naira-grossing movie that took us by storm and if you love Nigerian movies with a blend of action, drama, and love, you will love this.
Speaking of its delicious cast, we have superstars like Funke Akindele (Jedidah Judah – a mother of five sons) who also doubles as the co-director and producer, Jide Kene Achufusi (Emeka Judah), and Uzee Usman (Adamu Judah) the responsible older sons of the Jedidah.
The younger sons – Timini Egbuson (Pere Judah – pickpocket and petty thief), Tobi Makinde (Shina Judah – a community hoodlum and tout), and Olumide Oworu (Ejiro Judah – a mummy’s boy, loverboy, madly in love with his girlfriend Testimony played by Genoveva Umeh).
There were also some interesting characters to note – Chairman Chigozie Onouha played by Uzor Arukwe, Collette (Nse Ikpe Etim), Hilda (Juliana Olayode), and Mama Caro (Fathia Balogun).
“This movie takes you through the life of a woman who had five sons with five different men, lived a hard life, and supported her children through trouble and bad behaviors. However, the trajectory of their lives takes a different turn when she is diagnosed with a chronic illness and her children decide to steal to fund her treatment… Here, the action-filled part of the movie unfolds.”
Speaking of Timini (Pere), we are super excited to see him play a role different from what we are used to. Juliana Olayode’s presence in this movie also brings good tidings as we look forward to seeing her in more movies from Funke Ayotunde Akindele Network (FAAN).
Breath of Life
“Timi, a gifted clergyman turns into an old lonely curmudgeon when his family is tragically taken from him. Until Elijah, a humble man with big dreams of becoming a priest, comes into his life. Through Elijah, Timi not only learns to live again but also realizes purpose for all his gifts and wealth.” – Prime Video
This movie takes you through the amazing swimming feat of Timi (played by Wale Ojo), marriage to Bridget (Eku Edewor), his daughter, and life as a talented and well-read minister living peacefully within the historic town of Ibadan until tragedy struck and changed the cause of his life and faith.
Many years after attempting multiple suicides and living a solitary life, the death of his house manager brings a new set of characters his way – Elijah (played by Chimezie Imo), Anna (played by Genoveva Umeh) who brings light to his life, and some solace to the movie.
I know you may not like spoilers like I do, so I will cap it here. Just keep in mind that if you love, historic romance and emotional movies, this should be top on your Prime Videos movie pick for this weekend.
Adire
The first time I heard about this movie, three things stood out for me – Kehinde Bankole, her poise and of course the top-notch styles in the movie, if you guessed this, you were right.
The movie takes us back in time to simpler days, when small-town folks found joy in ganging up against newcomers who don’t fit into their typical image, and Adire played by Kehinde Bankole with a tinted past and bad reputation preceding her, becomes a prime example of the enemy of their progress.
Let’s serve a brief synopsis of the movie to spice up the deal and get you Netflixing and chilling this weekend. “Adire is about a sex-worker-turned-entrepreneur who moves to a small town and launches her own lingerie business, only to draw the ire of a preacher’s wife.” — IMBD
Pretty Woman
“A classic love-comedy story that everyone must watch at least once in their lifetime” – My colleague had this to say about this movie and I have no doubt that you might end up falling in love with the movie as much as she did.
If you must know, this classic first released in 1990 and directed by Garry Marshall, just made a comeback on Netflix and may just be what you need to get your weekend off to a great start especially when bae/boo is around.
Want to know the hype about this movie? Ready to give a romantic comedy a chance to get you loving life again? Here is a synopsis – “Edward (played by Richard Gere), a rich entrepreneur, hires Vivian (played by Julia Roberts), a sex worker, to accompany him to a few social events. Trouble ensues when he falls in love with her and they try to bridge the gap between their worlds.” — IMBD
Miracle in Cell 7
I wanted to watch this movie earlier in the week but was told that it may make me shed a tear or two. So, if you are in the mood to have a good cry for the work that you murdered this week, the special visit from Sapa, and the big scam that is adulthood, then give this movie a spin.
“Based on the 2013 Korean movie Miracle in Cell No. 7 and the real-life story of a man who was tortured and pleaded guilty under duress to the rape and murder of a 9-year-old girl. This movie takes you on a thrilling journey, exploring a story of love between a mentally-ill father who was wrongly accused of murder and his lovely six-year-old daughter. The prison will be their home.”
Extras (because we can!)
Lift
In all honesty, I love Kevin Hart and have taken time out of my nights to watch his movies as they drop, but as hard as I tried, I couldn’t get past a few minutes of this movie before tuning out.
It could have been the boat chase, Kevin’s continued smile, or how slow the action seemed to be playing out but who knows, you may get to love it better than I did.
If you don’t deep it too much and want to watch an action movie that might turn out to be more of a comedy, then this is for you.
The storyline goes thus “A master thief is wooed by his ex-girlfriend and the FBI to pull off an impossible heist with his international crew on a 777 passenger flight from London to Zurich.”
Saltburn
If you like movies that stimulate your senses, then this may be for you.
This is an extra that I thought to add because, if I watched it, I think you should too, that’s all…
If ‘no gree for anybody’, were a person, Oliver Quick (played by Barry Keoghan) would be that person, even if you do it in a nasty and rather twisted way (that leaves me and maybe a few other people confused).
The movie begins with a look at the lives of young students fresh at the University of Oxford, where we get to watch a friendship that springs with unlikely people (Oliver Quick and Felix Catton) from a series of unfortunate events. In summary, “Distraught by his classmate Oliver’s unfortunate living situation, Felix, a rich student, invites him over to his estate. Soon, a series of horrifying events engulf Felix’s family.”
