A three-month-old baby was locked inside a family car as temperatures soared to 30 degrees outside due to a suspected malfunction with the vehicle.

Lewis and Sarah Cianci, from Beenleigh in Queensland, said their Skoda Kodiaq locked itself on Friday afternoon with the keys and their baby boy inside.

“I got out of the car and went around to where our baby was in the car seat and by the time I got around there, the doors were locked,” Mr Cianci said.

“Just terrible terrible to know as a parent your kid’s stuck in the car and there’s nothing you can do about it,” he added.

Eventually police shattered the window on the driver door and rescued the baby boy.

“He was crying, like he was pretty upset, he felt pretty warm as well,” Mr Cianci said.

He was checked and cleared by paramedics.

Questions now remain about how and why the car locked itself while both sets of keys were inside the centre console.

“This particular case certainly sounds like some kind of malfunction,” technology commentator Chris Griffith said.

“We’ve seen this particular issue happen quite a bit on Skodas and other cars we’ve seen almost an identical scenario overseas.”

The Ciancis are too scared to put their child back inside the car ever again. Plus even if they wanted to, they don’t know if they’ll ever be able to remove every shard of glass sprayed throughout the vehicle.

“It seems pretty unsafe to me so at this time I’m trying to get a refund,” Mr Cianci said.

Skoda said it was arranging a loan vehicle for the family.

“Our cars lock and unlock no differently to vehicles from any number of brands,” it said in a statement.

“We’re not aware of an issue such as the one described, but will attempt to replicate it as part of the investigation.”
