Edmonton weather: Heavy snow expected today, city to see 5-10 cm

A look at Tuesday’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.

It’s -14 C at the Edmonton Blatchford weather station with 16 km/h winds out of the east and a wind chill of -22.

Winter is no longer coming — it’s very much here. All of it. Cold, extreme cold and lots of snow to boot. Beginning around 8 a.m. this morning, forecasters expect the city will see total  snowfall accumulations of 5-10 cm by the end of the afternoon. By evening, the snow is expected become lighter with overnight accumulations of 2 cm.

Snowfall warnings

Environment Canada has issued snowfall warnings to the west of the city, for communities in Grande Prairie, Valleyview, High Level, Fort Vermilion, Hinton, Grande Cache, Whitecourt, and Edson. People living in those areas can expect to see 10 to 15 cm by the end of day, with heavy snow expected to cause near zero visibility in some areas.

Extreme Cold

Extreme cold warnings have been issued for communities in the far north of the province, including Fort Chipewyan and Wood Buffalo National Park. Forecasters are calling for wind chill values near -40 in those areas tonight and throughout the week.

The cold will extend south towards Edmonton starting tonight with wind chill factors locally expected to feel like -31, with a risk of frostbite. Temperatures in the city are expected to plunge further Thursday and Friday with forecast highs of -29 C and -30 C, and lows of -33 C and -36 C.
