European Commission Vice President Margaritis Schinas has a solution to boost young voter turnout at this year’s European election, and it’s a bejeweled one.
The EU just needs a special shoutout from Taylor Swift herself.
“No one can mobilize youth better than young people,” Schinas said Wednesday during a press conference. “It’s young people who can mobilize young people to participate, more than commissioners.”
And who better suited for the task than Time magazine’s Person of the Year?
“I very much hope that someone from her media team follows this press conference and relays our request to her,” Schinas said.
After all, rallying young voters is nothing new for Swift. Last September, the “Shake it Off” singer encouraged her 272 million Instagram followers to register to vote and, within hours, Vote.org reported more than 35,000 registrations, a 23 percent jump from last year.
During her near two-decade career, Swift has become entangled with U.S. politics and often the center of the country’s eternal culture war, despite some earlier attempts to stay out of the political conversation.
And as the EU’s June election draws near, where Schinas said a high level of participation of young Europeans is “crucial” for democracy, the Commission VP is hoping Swift will be able to do the same for the EU.
Swift, who is launching the European leg of her record-breaking Eras Tour in spring 2024 (not long before the European election!), will be performing in Paris on May 9 — “Europe Day,” Schinas reminded everyone.
Voters gonna vote, Schinas hopes …
