Accessory maker Hyperkin is bringing back Microsoft’s original Xbox Controller S as a modern gamepad, complete with Hall effect joysticks and triggers. The original Controller S came with the Japanese version of the console, while other markets got the massive “Duke” controller. Eventually, the more compact controller became the default and superseded the Duke. Hyperkin is calling its take on the more compact gamepad the “DuchesS.”

This will be the third retro Xbox controller design that Hyperkin has resurrected. It released its take on the Duke in 2018 and followed it up with a new version of the Xbox 360’s controller called the Xenon last year.

Like its previous retro Xbox controllers, the DuchesS has been updated to work with modern systems and is officially licensed to work with the Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, and Windows 10 and 11. There’s a share button built in for Series consoles, a USB-C port, and a 3.5mm headset jack. But perhaps most exciting is its inclusion of Hall effect joysticks and triggers, which should make them more resistant to growing inaccurate over time.

Hyperkin is only announcing that the controller is in development today, and the images above show in-development designs for the controller that may change ahead of release. Pricing or an exact release date is yet to be confirmed.
