The Islamic State on Thursday claimed responsibility for the deadly explosions that killed dozens of people near the tomb of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani on Wednesday.
The militant group posted a statement on Telegram taking responsibility for the attack, according to multiple media reports.
Iran’s state media said that at least two explosions occurred Wednesday at a cemetery in the city of Kerman, where hundreds of people were commemorating the death of Soleimani, a general who led Iran’s paramilitary Quds force before being killed by a U.S. drone strike in January 2020.
Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Wednesday vowed a “severe pounding and a deserving retribution” against the perpetrators of the memorial attack.
