It was deeply troubling to read that a 49-year-old man died in custody at the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) detainee management unit (DMU) on Jan. 5. This already disturbing news was compounded by news that the man had allegedly been arrested because EPS assumed he was intoxicated. Intoxication arrests are an archaic policing relic.
