In partnership with Comcast, alongside the English Premier League, Showmax will be relaunching its platform on January 23, 2024, with an exclusive content pipeline from NBC Universal, Dreamworks Animation, Sky and a special package from the Premier League.
The new Showmax consists of three plans: Showmax Entertainment, Showmax Entertainment Mobile and Showmax Premier League. These plans are Showmax’s next step in creating content for Africa while creating a market for streaming in Africa beyond the reported streaming population in the continent.
“Personally, I don’t think there is any market for streaming in Africa. The market is so wide that we’re all starting to create the market. What we have brought to the market is brand new, and we expect it to cause exponential growth,” Opeoluwa Filani, Showmax’s General Manager, said at a Showmax press briefing in Lagos.
Powered by SuperSport and made for mobile users, Showmax Premier League will become Africa’s first Premier League mobile streaming service, with all 380 games offered live for N2,900 a month. Showmax Entertainment on mobile costs N1,200 a month, while the Showmax Entertainment plan is priced at N2,500 per month.
According to Opeoluwa Filani, these rates are Showmax’s attempt at providing affordable streaming. He said, “There’s no other entertainment platform with the infrastructure, experience and understanding of the African market as MultiChoice does, and Showmax will be delivering this service to you.”
Aside from the Premier League, the new Showmax introduces users to multiple Showmax Originals with a scheduled 1300 hours of Showmax Originals to be produced in the coming year, a number that reportedly represents a significant 150% increase in production output compared to the year before.
