Six people have been arrested after dozens of heavily disguised men wearing black, including a neo-Nazi leader, stormed a train in northern Sydney.
The group, who were concealing their faces and carrying shields, boarded the train at Artarmon.
Police stopped the train when it arrived at North Sydney, getting other members of the public to leave while they addressed the group, which included notorious Melbourne-based neo-Nazi group leader Thomas Sewell.
“On arrival, members of the public were directed to leave the train while officers boarded and contained the group off approximately 61 to a few carriages,” police said.
“The group all had their faces concealed and were carrying a number of items, including shields and a flag.
“The items were seized by police.
“During the operation, police removed members of the group individually to collect their details and issue a move-on order.”
Six of the 61 people were arrested, and dozens of infringements were issued by police.
“Six people were arrested and taken to Chatswood Police Station, where they are assisting police with inquiries,” police said.
“A further 55 men were issued Rail Infringement Notices for offensive behaviour.
“Two men have since been released and issued infringement notices for offensive behaviour.”
During the operation, buses were diverted away from the station. Some train services were terminated at the station.
One commuter named Jason told 2GB Drive he “knew something was wrong” when his train which had departed from Wollstonecraft started to slow down.
“I thought this isn’t normal, is this train terminating?” he said.
He reached out to Sydney Trains on X (formerly known as Twitter) and asked if the train was going to terminate.
“They wrote back and said ‘yes, this is terminating due to a police operation’,” he said.
“They had just made an announcement on the train that ‘this train is terminating, everyone please alight from the train’.
“Everyone just got off, stepped over to the next platform to get onto the next train.
“I could see down the other end of the platform there were police down there with these guys.”
