A stunt car went awry and crashed into a property during the filming of a new police road safety advertisement in Adelaide.

The production crew had staged a crash scene at Port Road in Alberton today for a new campaign urging drivers to be aware on the roads.

But the shoot went horribly wrong when one of the empty cars went flying into a fence, narrowly missing parked vehicles.

Police Minister Joe Szakacs, who was on site overseeing the filming, questioned the legitimacy of the crash.

"The first question I asked, 'was this supposed to happen?' They said no," he said.

The safety advisor on set, Clay Dunn, was unaware of what went wrong.

"Yeah we didn't expect it to fly away so I'm not sure why the vehicle took off the way it did but luckily we had enough measures in place that no one got hurt," he said.

While no one was injured and the fence would be fixed at no expense to the owner, a nearby store manager said the situation could have been "very dangerous".

"It could have been really disastrous," Sarah said.

"Potentially they could have driven into the shop."

The footpath had been closed and a section of the road was locked down to allow the production crew to safely stage the crash.

But it only demonstrated just how much damage can be done even in a controlled environment, Szakacs said.

Police will investigate the crash.

The road safety ad has come after a horror year in road-related deaths, which also claimed the life of South Australia Police Commissioner Grant Stevens' son.

About 113 people died on the roads while another 850 suffered serious injuries from crashes in 2023.

The failure to wear a seatbelt properly was a factor in one out of ten road fatalities, according to police.
