Tinder has announced it will exit the Belarusian market on February 15.
The dating app will shut down its services entirely, leaving singles in Minsk just enough time to match with “the one” until Valentine’s Day.
Users will be able to “match and chat with other users until this deadline,” Tinder said in a press release. And not even Tinder Gold subscribers will be spared after that.
The app’s parent company, Match Group, has not disclosed why it is withdrawing from Belarus. However, the U.S.-based platform has been used to identify critics of President Alexander Lukashenko’s regime before. In November 2022, a woman was detained in Minsk after her profile pictures, which showed her protesting against the autocratic ruler, were leaked to the police.
In July 2023, the company left the Russian dating market, citing its commitment to protect human rights.
Tinder joins a long list of firms that have pulled out of Belarus over its support of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
