A mother-of-two says she was threatened with a knife during a home invasion in broad daylight in Melbourne's south-east.

Dr Sugandha, her daughter and 10-year-old son arrived at their home in Mount Waverley on Friday afternoon to find a group of men ransacking the property.

The thugs had jumped the fence to gain access to their home on Huntingdale Road.

"I saw my contents of my bag were all scattered on the floor and I could hear loud banging upstairs," Sughandha told 9News.

She said the thieves were trying to break into the family's heavy-duty safe.

"They had the equipment to do that, and the methodology to do that so that really scares me."

Sugandha's fears were only heightened in the wake of doctor Ash Gordon's alleged murder during a robbery only 10 kilometres down the road.

She attempted to grab her children and flee but was confronted by a masked man waving a knife.

CCTV from the family's home filmed the thieves making off with some of their belongings, worth upwards of a $100,000.

The family are even more concerned as they have always remained vigilant and safety conscious, yet the group still managed to break in.

"We always think that the home is a refuge and it's a fortress and you know, it's a safe place to be Sugandha's husband told 9News.

"Maybe there's no such thing as a safe area anymore," Dr Arun said.

Police are investigating.
