An elderly woman's family are devastated she has died after she was allegedly assaulted in a hospital in Sydney's west.

Samira Kamaleddine, 81, was allegedly attacked by Richard Lim when she was a patient in Bankstown-Lidcome Hospital on January 4 about 3am.

It's alleged Lim, who was also a patient in the hospital, grabbed and assaulted Kamaleddine's two daughters first while they were waiting at the hospital, before he confronted and punched the 81-year-old in an unprovoked attack.

Last Sunday, Kamaleddine was transferred to Liverpool Hospital for an operation but the damage from the attack was too severe.

"The elderly woman remained in hospital in a critical condition before dying yesterday," police said.

Kamaleddine's daughters told 9News she died just before 7pm last night, surrounded by all of her family.

Lim was arrested and, once medically cleared, charged with cause grievous bodily harm to person with intent, choke person intend to commit indictable offence, intentionally choke person with recklessness and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Although, police are now looking into upgrading his charges.

He has been remanded in custody and is due to face Burwood Local Court at the end of this month.
