A man has shared his heartbreak after his fiancé was allegedly killed in a random stabbing at a real estate agency in Adelaide.

Julie Seed, 38, was allegedly murdered in Plympton on December 20 by a man armed with a knife and hammer.

He had been released from psychiatric care only two days prior.

Seed's partner, Chris Smith, was at home when he received a phone call from her colleague, telling him to go to the hospital.

"But it wasn't until we got to the Royal Adelaide Hospital that we found out the worst," he told 9News.

Smith was left to break the news to Seed's daughters and her family overseas.

"That was some of the hardest stuff that I've ever had to do but it was just being there for the girls and having to be strong," he said.

"The 20th of every month is going to be hard."

Almost two months after Seed's death, Smith said he was determined to fight for answers.

He is joined by Seed's coworker Susan Scardigno, 50, who received serious injuries while she attempted to save her friend's life.

Together, they want to know why the alleged attacker had been released from care, and the pair have met with the state's chief psychiatrist.

"There was obviously some mistakes along the way and Julie was just an innocent person in the wrong place at the wrong time," Smith said.

"It could have been prevented, so if we start at the start hopefully we can help."

An independent investigation is also under way. Shaun Dunk, 30, has been charged with murder and attempted murder.

The community has rallied behind the grieving loved ones and are tomorrow holding a fundraising event at the Highway Hotel to raise money for Smith and Seed's daughters.
