Metropolitan Fire Service's Declan Dwyer said his crew got to the scene within a few minutes of the tree branch falling.

"Knowing there was a person trapped we were going to have to swing into life support and first aid but unfortunately there was nothing we could do," Dwyer said.

A staff member who was working at a childcare centre opposite the park said she had to rush all of the children inside after they were told something had happened.

"It appears this lady, she was doing nothing more than sitting on the lawn having something to eat," the childcare worker said.
