A Brisbane father has confronted an alleged young offender during an attempted break-in of his home as his wife and young children slept.

The teenage boy was allegedly caught using a knife to jimmy open the front door of an Alexandra Hills, Redlands home overnight.

David Smedley told 9News he awoke to the noise and confronted the boy.

“My first thought was to make sure the kids are safe,” Smedley said.

“I’ve opened up the door, he’s taken a couple of steps back and I said to him in no uncertain terms, ‘take another step mate and you’re going to be engrained on this driveway here’.

“He didn’t move.”

Smedley said he moved his family into a room and locked the door until police arrived.

“They’ve gotten away with it too much. Enough’s enough and he wasn’t going anywhere,” he said.

Police arrested the alleged repeat offender, who they say is part of a group of teenagers responsible for a crime spree across the city’s bayside that saw multiple homes targeted.

Officers are investigating whether last night’s incident is linked to teenagers who allegedly wielded a machete at a Cleveland home on Thursday.

Smedley said he is angry over what unfolded at his home and is now installing security cameras.
