Police are searching for a man who went into a home and sexually assaulted a woman in the early hours of this morning in Western Australia.

The woman, aged in her 20s, was asleep in her bed when the man broke into the Mandurah home just after 3am.

The stranger covered the woman's mouth, held her hands behind her back and then sexually assaulted her, a housemate said.

By the time her housemates heard her scream, the man was gone. It's thought he may have entered the house through an unlocked door.

The victim, a student, claimed someone had been watching the house for a week and even peered through her bedroom window at one stage.

"The public have a right to feel safe in their own bed the young lady's very traumatised and this is unacceptable," Detective Sergeant Clinton Bragg said.

The man is described as being aged in his 30s, and of heavy build with short hair.

Detectives from the Sex Assault Squad are investigating and are looking for anybody with dashcam from the area between 2.30am and 4am to contact them.
