Three months after his leg amputation, the Chairman of the Actor Guild of Nigeria, Emeka Rollas, has confirmed that John ‘Mr Ibu’ Okafor has died of cardiac arrest on Saturday, March 2, 2024.
Emeka Rollas confirmed this as he revealed that Mr Ibu’s long-time manager, Don Single Nwuzor disclosed that the veteran actor had relapsed after his amputation.
Born October 17, 1961, John Okafor has made a name for himself with his comical roles in his ‘Mr Ibu‘ film instalments and has gone on to write his name among Nollywood’s veterans with features in over 200 Nollywood films.
In a career spanning over 20 years, the veteran actor has dabbled in various forms of art aside from film. In 2015, he also dabbled in music, where he released two singles, ‘This Girl’ and ‘Do You Know.’
His death is being felt across the industry as creatives across the entertainment industry have taken to their social media platforms to eulogise the comedian and actor.
Ugoccie, a budding Nigerian artistes said, “Mr Ibu told me I had such a powerful voice and resorted to calling me a woman on fire anytime he saw me. He told me my voice was larger than me. Thank you for the joy you brought to our lives.”
On the other hand, Bovi said, “The passing of John Okafor, aka Mr Ibu, is a sad chapter in Nigerian entertainment history. Let’s take solace in the fact that his works will live on and will inspire generations unborn. RIP to one of the greats.”
The actor is survived by his children and wife.
