It was a night to unveil The Macallan’s 81-year-old Single Malt whisky, The Reach and what better way is there to serenade guests at the event than to have a singer and songwriter whose very career represents the timelessness of ultra-premium scotch whisky brand bring to elites who love its acquired taste. Cobhams Asuquo delivered that range of timelessness and more as he hit every note with a live band that added an ethereal flow to his performance at the whisky launch in Lagos.
Dressed in a custom-made kimono styled by Stefan, Cobhams, the singer took the room on a sensory journey at The Jewel Aeida – a luxurious multifunctional event centre that sits on the luxurious side of Lagos. In a performance spanning two hours, the artiste, alongside his band, delights the audience in a three-set show that has everyone swaying by the end of the session.
The first set of performances started with a medley of jazz sounds and a live band sonic rendition of timeless classics with songs such as Alicia Keys’ ‘If I Ain’t Got You.’ It was subtle waves of melody as the guests all got to get the full Macallan experience with carefully curated meals and The Macallan 18-year-old Sherry Oak at the side to complete the sensory experience.
With a swirl and whisky-tasting break, Cobhmas’ second set started. Showcasing why he is indeed considered one of the best male vocalists in the country, he began his performance with a rendition of his song ‘New Beginning’ and later to a heart-tugging performance of ‘Angels All Around.’
As the second set of his performance came to an end there was applause as Cobhams showcased his vocal dexterity and timelessness of his songs, going in and out of falsettos amidst an ambiance that exuded luxury.
The room soon erupted into applause as the star took us to the next phase with a softer version of Bob Marley’s ‘Redemption Song’ – a song that centres around Marley’s thoughts on slavery and freedom. The third song led to isolated hums as the audience swayed to the sound of Cobhams’ vocals as his fingers lightly ran through his piano keys.
He ended the night with medleys of movie soundtracks. From the main theme title soundtrack written by German-Iranian composer Ramin Djawadi for the highly acclaimed series Game of Thrones to Loren Allred’s Never Enough for the film ‘The Greatest Showman,’ the night ended in grand style. With these songs, he simply took the audience on a journey that tugged at everyone’s heartstrings.
The night ended with applause as notable guests who attended the event, including Mai Atafo, Audu Maikori, Kelechi Amadi-Obi, and more got to experience the complete Macallan experience as the scotch whisky brand unveiled its 81-year-old whisky celebrating timelessness and luxury.
