Two people are believed to be trapped underground after a mine collapsed west of Melbourne.

Victoria Police confirmed the mine at Mount Clear, near Ballarat, collapsed today around 4.50pm.

Police said they believed two people were trapped underground at the Indicator Lane site.

Emergency services including police, paramedics and the CFA are responding to the incident.
