A one-day traffic blitz netted more than 1,300 violations in Edmonton, including those issued to a 21-year-old repeat road offender with only a learner’s licence, say police.
Operation 24 Hours ran April 18 in Edmonton, with police and City of Edmonton automated enforcement resulting issuing a total of 1,323 traffic violations, the 997 bulk being solely related to speed.
The other 326 other violations included 85 red light infractions, 178 non-hazardous Traffic Safety Act infractions pertaining to equipment, documents, etc., 39 hazardous infractions (moving violations), 16 distracting driving violations, one criminal code driving offence, and seven other criminal code charges related to vehicle stops.
During the April 18 event, city police traffic enforcement members were conducting laser speed enforcement near Millwoods Road and 36 B Avenue when they observed a black 2014 Cadillac ATS travelling 64 km/h in a posted 30km/h zone.
Officers conducted a traffic stop and discovered the vehicle was unregistered, uninsured and had multiple equipment violations. The 21-year-old male driver, who was stopped by police for the same offences last month, was also driving unaccompanied with a Class 7 learner’s licence. Investigators subsequently issued him multiple mandatory court violations and seized his vehicle.
