Authorities in Namibia are investigating a recent increase in rhino poaching, with 28 rhinos already killed this year, two-thirds of them in Etosha National Park.
The Ministry of Environment expressed concern over the 19 rhinos poached in Etosha, given its focus for conservation and being a major tourist destination.
Among the poached rhinos, 19 were critically endangered black rhinos and nine were near-threatened white rhinos. No arrests have been made thus far.
“We condemn the barbaric actions of those involved and urge anyone with any information that may assist us in apprehending the suspects to come forth,” the ministry’s statement said.
Rhinos are hunted for their horns, prized in East Asian nations for crafting traditional medicines and jewelry.
In 2023, Namibia saw 67 rhinos poached, marking a notable decline from the previous year’s record-breaking levels of rhino poaching.
