LONDON — Peter Murrell, the husband of former Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and ex-chief executive of the Scottish National Party, has been arrested for a second time in connection with a years-long investigation into the governing party’s finances.

In a statement released Thursday evening, Police Scotland said a 59-year-old man had been “re-arrested in connection with the ongoing investigation into the funding and finances of the Scottish National Party.”

The police force said he was taken into custody at 9.13 a.m. and, at the time of the statement, was still being questioned by detectives.

Police officers have been investigating the SNP’s finances since 2021.

Murrell was previously arrested in April last year, before being released without charge pending further investigation. As chief executive of the pro-independence SNP for almost 24 years, he was responsible for the running of the party’s internal machinery.

Sturgeon — who unexpectedly quit as SNP leader and first minister in February last year — was also arrested months later in 2023, as was the party’s former treasurer Colin Beattie. Both were released without charge pending further investigation.
