Dutch anti-Islamic firebrand Geert Wilders was in a good mood this morning after sealing a deal overnight to form the most right-wing government in recent Dutch history.

“The sun is going to shine again in the Netherlands,” he wrote early Thursday on social media.

The almost six-month talks to broker a new government between Wilders’ far-right Party for Freedom (PVV), the outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), the centrist New Social Contract (NSC) party and the populist Farmer Citizen Movement (BBB) finally accelerated this week.

The four leaders at last agreed on a proposal late Wednesday afternoon, which then had to be greenlit by their own parliamentary factions. Shortly before midnight, the VVD was the last of the four parties to approve the deal.

Notably, Wilders has yet to announce his candidate for prime minister, after distancing himself from the role under pressure from his coalition partners during talks.

The coalition agreement, which at 26 pages is on the short side by Dutch standards, describes plans to curb migration and roll back measures to limit nitrogen emissions which have led to protests among farmers.

“We want to reverse the far-too-high influx of asylum seekers and immigrants. We want farmers, gardeners and fishermen to have a future again,” the document reads.
