A luxury car worth close to $400,000 has been destroyed, with a firebug targeting the McLaren parked on the street late last night.

Police are now tracking down the culprit who was caught on security footage using a pizza box to spark the blaze in Sefton in Sydney's west,

It was a dream car for Hamad Ajajz who forked out $350,000 for the McLaren just over a year ago.

The builder and father-of-three listed the car for sale online just three days ago.

Now it's destroyed, with Ajajz saying it's "very upsetting."

"I can't even look at it," he said.

But this was no professional job.

An unsuspecting man with an umbrella, armed with a lighter and some cardboard can be seen on footage.

Just before 11pm he appears on Rodd Street.

A flickering flame is protected by his umbrella as he lights up a pizza box.

He slides the blaze under the bumper before darting off.

Neighbours' attempts to throw water on the flames were unsuccessful.

Hamad and his son arrived home moments before firefighters began dousing the blaze.

"It's devastating to be honest. The way we came in and seen it lit up on fire," he said, in tears.

"I don't think there's anyone who has it out for us.

"He probably wanted to go for a ride and I never maybe didn't give him the chance to , maybe."

The car is insured and police are appealing for help.
