Ayra Starr has released the visuals to ‘Last Heartbreak Song ft Giveon,’ a single that was the second most streamed featured song on her sophomore album ‘The Year I Turned 21’ on the first day of release.
The Grammy-nominated star taps the American singer Giveon, behind the viral heartbreak track ‘Heartbreak Anniversary,’ to release a single that speaks to heartbreak and letting go of a toxic relationship.
With the visuals of the single directed by Bobby Hanaford, Ayra Starr showcases the aftermath of heartbreak in a stripped setting, while Giveon matches the energy.
“I can appreciate a unique voice and a raw talent. Everybody knows I love a heartbreak song and it was right up my alley. I don’t usually shoot that many videos but I’m a huge fan of Ayra,” Giveon told Billboard News.
Although Ayra tries to mirror expressions of someone hurt, there was not enough angst in the video for the visual storytelling to be convincing enough. The lack of emotions in the visuals coupled with other elements made the video fall flat in comparison to the brilliance of the track.
Despite the visuals falling short of expectation, Hanaford has done incredible work with the Mavin crew over the years. In 2021, Bobby Hanaford worked with Johnny Drille for the visuals to his hit single, ‘Loving Is Harder.’ In 2022, he worked with Rema for ‘Soundgasm.’ He has also worked with international acts such as John Legend, Jeremih, G-Eazy, and many more.
