DRIVERS of a US state have the option to add crucial information that shows up when it’s scanned by emergency personnel.
It’s easy, free, and can be done online within minutes.

The Wisconsin DMV has added the ability for drivers to add emergency contact information to their driver’s license profiles when the driver’s license number is run.
It would also show up when it’s scanned by emergency personnel.
Last year, the state passed a law that would allow drivers to add emergency contact information to their DMV profile.
Wisconsin Statute 343.177 reads:
“As part of every application for an original, duplicate, reinstated, reissued, or renewal license or endorsement, the department shall inquire whether the applicant wants to provide emergency contact information, which shall include the emergency contact’s full name, residential address, phone number, and relationship to the applicant.”
“The department shall make available on its Internet site and at each local examining center a separate form on which an applicant may provide emergency contact information. If an applicant provides emergency contact information under this section, the department shall record the information in its file for the person.”
For the driver’s safety and security, the law also states the DMV is not permitted to share the information with anyone except for law enforcement or the applicant.
“Governor Evers signed the ‘To Inform Families First’ or ‘TIFF’ law last year,” wrote the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
“It was put in place to provide law enforcement the ability to contact a family member or other loved one more quickly in the event of an emergency. Adding this information is not required. Only law enforcement, including police in other states, are able to access the information.”
For added security, the emergency contact doesn’t show up on the applicant’s license.
A new license will not need to be permitted, either.
To make it even simpler, drivers won’t need to go into a DMV to add an emergency contact, either.
For every new driver’s license or stated ID application after June 1, emergency contact information will be requested.
Anyone with a valid license can add a new emergency contact by visiting the transportation agency’s website.
“This contact information could be available to law enforcement agencies in the event that you are in a collision or are experiencing a medical emergency,” the agency wrote.
Adding emergency contact info
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation will need this information to add emergency contacts:
You will need to enter:
- Your Wisconsin Driver’s License or ID Card number
- The last 4 digits of your Social Security number *
- Your date of birth
OR
- Your first name, middle initial, and last name
- Your complete Social Security number *
- Your date of birth
AND
- Your emergency contact’s name
- Your emergency contact’s address
- Your emergency contact’s phone number
- Your relationship to the emergency contact
“This information may save crucial time if ever it becomes necessary to contact your family members or other loved ones.”
Before applying, drivers will need the full driver’s license number or state ID number, the last four digits of their social security number, and date of birth.
If ID information isn’t available, the applicant’s first, middle initial, and last name will be needed along with their full social security number and date of birth.
For the emergency contact, it’s important to enter their information accurately to ensure they’re contacted correctly in the event of an emergency.
For the contact, the agency asks for their full name, current address, a valid phone number, and their relationship to the applicant.
