Roadmaster Drivers School, a commercial driver’s license training school with multiple locations across the nation, paid $400,000 to settle out of court.
Each affected student is eligible for a one-time payment of $800.
Between October 12, 2016, and May 10, 2024, many students paid for testing and education through the school that would ultimately result in a valid Class C license.
However, several students were issued licenses that the state of Pennsylvania’s Department of Transportation later invalidated.
The reasoning was due to “improperly conducted testing skills” during the eight years.
“Students such as Plaintiff were harmed as a result of Defendants’ actions, including the loss of income, lost revenue, lost jobs, and other harm associated with not receiving the services they paid for,” the complaint reads, provided by Class Action.
The school was accused of having students sign “deceptive and inaccurate documents” for “services that were not actually provided.”
Some students said their driver’s license was made invalid after it was signed by instructors who were not certified by the state of Pennsylvania.
Students who were affected won’t have to register to receive payment.
Some students who paid as much as $7,000 in tuition, fees, and other associated costs are entitled to full refunds as part of the settlement.
They are encouraged, though, to file a change of address form through Top Class Action’s website to let the necessary parties know they’ve moved.
It’s also to ensure the payment check is sent to the correct address.
The change of address form can be accessed here.
What's a class-action settlement?
Class action lawsuits offer groups of people, or 'classes,' a way to band together in court.
These suits are often brought by one or a few people who allege a company or other entity has wronged a large group of people.
When a suit becomes a class action, it extends to all “class members,” or people who may have similar complaints to those who filed the suit.
Companies often settle class actions – offering payment to class members who typically waive their right to pursue further legal action by accepting money.
These payout agreements frequently include statements by the defendant denying wrongdoing. Companies tend to settle class actions to avoid the costs of further litigation.
Pollution, discrimination, or false advertising are a few examples of what can land a class action on a company’s doorstep.
If a student wants to object or exclude themselves from the payment, the deadline to do so is August 3, 2024.
Roadmaster Drivers School did not admit to any wrongdoing but agreed to pay $400,000 as a settlement in court.
The final approval hearing is set for September 18, 2024.
