Neighbours applied pressure to her neck and body after she was found in the garden before paramedics arrived.

9News understands her partner Christopher John Sullivan, 72, barricaded himself inside their home after the alleged attack.

Tactical response officers negotiated with him until he eventually came out and was arrested.

Mountford was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital where she underwent emergency surgery.

The 60-year-old is a church volunteer who has helped support victims of domestic violence.

"We are devastated and utterly heartbroken that our dear mother has endured such a horrifying ordeal," Mountford's daughter told 9News.

"All we want is for our mother to overcome her injuries."

Sullivan faced court charged with attempted murder.

He told the magistrate he intended to plead guilty but no official plea was entered.

The matter was stood down while the accused was provided legal advice.

When it resumed Sullivan did have a duty lawyer. He did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody.

He is due back in court on June 26.
