England fans didn’t let the rain dampen spirits as they celebrated Gareth Southgate’s sides opening Euros victory.

Jude Bellingham’s first-half header meant the Three Lions started their campaign with a 1-0 win against Serbia.

The heavens opened on the Fanzone in the Flag Market but it didn’t stop the hundreds of football fans having a good time.

Mark Whittle, Preston BID manager, said: “Despite the ‘typical Preston weather’, guests stuck it out and helped to keep the atmosphere alive, as England did the business on the pitch. If we’d have had a 3.00pm kick off time, we’d have been basking in the sunshine. We actually saw a number of people bring sunscreen with them, which was wishful thinking!

“Thankfully, the weather looks to be turning a corner, and Thursday’s game against Denmark is scheduled to be dry. All the tables have sold out, but standing tickets remain for that game, and the match on the 25th, against Slovenia.

“A massive thanks to everyone who didn’t let a bit (a lot) of rain have them running for cover, and of course to city centre businesses, and our partners, Harrison Drury and Smooth Radio North West, for enabling the Fanzone events to take place.”

The Fanzone, organised by Preston’s Business Improvement District, is operating again on the Flag Market for the England v Denmark game on Thursday (20 June) and then the Slovenia game on Tuesday 25 June. Entry is £6 per person.
