A mini-supermarket was slapped with a zero star hygiene rating after inspectors found “evidence of extensive mouse activity” throughout.
Food Plus, on New Hall Lane, was handed the worst possible rating following the inspection on May 26, 2023 – making it the only establishment in Preston currently awarded zero. The owners were ordered to make improvements or face punishment including potential prosecution.
However, Blog Preston understands the owners of the shop have been engaging with Preston City Council and the mouse issue was resolved. Despite this, they have not requested a reinspection and, should they have done so, it would have to be carried out within three months.

The public listing of the rating reports that “major improvement” was needed in both the “cleanliness and condition of facilities and building” and “management of food safety” categories, while improvement is needed in “hygienic food handling”. Blog Preston has now obtained a copy of the full report which gives more detail on the issues found.
It states: “During the inspection, evidence of extensive mouse activity was noted throughout the entire premises. Appropriate treatment methods must be used to eliminate these pests.
“All areas where food is prepared and stored must be clean and capable of being kept clean. This is so that pests are not attracted into your premises and the risk of food being contaminated by dirt is minimised. Thoroughly clean the entire premises.”
“There was an excessive accumulation of refuse to the outside of the building. This must be cleared immediately, and arrangements made to prevent food waste and other refuse accumulating in the future.”
The shop stocks a range of English, Polish, Lithuanian and Latvian products including meat, fish and bread.It underwent a voluntary closure after the inspection and Blog Preston understands there has since been full co-operation with the council, including using a pest controller and taking action to prevent recurrences.
