Save-A-Lot is closing down its grocery store in Buffalo, New York.

The location found in Broadway Market will shutter soon, although a date has not been confirmed, as per local NBC affiliate WRGZ.

Handwritten closing signs can be seen all around the store notifying customers of 20% off sales.

When the location finally closes its doors, locals in Buffalo’s Eastside will only have two major grocery giants, Aldi and Tops.

City officials said they were initially unaware of the store closing.

“I was not told anything officially from the city,”  Councilman Mitch Nowakowsk told WRGZ.

“The market manager figured out that he wanted to close by handwritten signs on the front of the door.”

He explained: “It’s been blamed on the workers and the rising cost of wages and it seems to be avoiding the real problem that exists with the operator.”

Residents have shared their upset at the closure.

“This is crazy! I can’t believe they’re closing! What are we going to do?” one told the outlet.

“I come up here two, three, four times a week. It’s economically feasible for everybody’s pockets,” said another fan of the discount store.

“It’s bad because now the senior citizens don’t have anywhere to go,” another shopper told local ABC affiliate WKBW.

“There’s nowhere to shop. Now people that don’t have vehicles now they have to bust it or try to get a Jitney or whatever it is.”

Store owner Ron Horrigan is six months behind on rent and has been dealing with rampant shoplifting, according to The Buffalo News.

RIVALS FALLING

Where is Stop & Shop?

Stop & Shop is an American supermarket chain founded in Somerville, Massachusetts in 1914.

There are currently around 400 locations across five US states.

  • Connecticut: 88
  • Massachusetts: 125
  • New Jersey: 57
  • Rhode Island: 27
  • New York: 100

Rival Stop and Shop has confirmed it is closing stores across the five states it operates in: Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island.

The grocer plans to close several underperforming locations but has left shoppers in the dark about how many stores face the chopping block.

“The value proposition and pricing at Stop & Shop are simply not strong enough,” said JJ Fleeman, the CEO of Ahold Delhaize, Stop & Shop’s parent company.

The store in Jackson Township, New Jersey is set to close in early fall after its lease expires.

Meanwhile, a local grocery outlet is closing down after 60 years.
