Howie Long thinks Brady is capable of matching John Madden’s broadcasting legend[/caption]
Long is excited to get to work with Brady and see him in the broadcast booth, and is boldly predicting that he can be the next legendary broadcaster like John Madden.
The Fox analyst shared on the Green Light podcast that he thinks Brady will be able to parlay his fame and football knowledge into expert analysis.
“People are going to tune in for Tom,” Long said.
“Generally you say the game is what draws people in, and I think that’s still true. Dallas-Philadelphia, people are going to tune in … but it’s like John Madden.
“You’re watching John Madden do a football game and he brings a different element.
“Tom’s insight into situational football, into moments that he’s had during his career, challenges, things that you’re facing on the field in real time, he can reference.
“And I’m mesmerized by him.”
Long also compared Brady’s entrance into the Fox Sports role to when he took over the starting quarterback role for the New England Patriots.
Brady is taking over from Greg Olsen, who was a fan-favorite broadcaster in the NFL.
Long thinks Brady has the chops to fill his shoes though, saying he got to know his character while on a team-building trip.
“He understands what it means to be a good teammate … as well as [how to be] someone who holds people accountable and all of that,” Long said.
“Tom is a smart guy, he’s a passionate guy. He talks a lot about the one thing that drives success the most is your willingness to work.
“And not everyone is willing to work. And I think Tom is going to work his rear end off at it.”
Long has seen plenty of faces come and go through Fox NFL during his time on the crew.
He was one of the inaugural members of Fox NFL Sunday when it was conceived in 1994.
Madden was on color commentary during Long’s first years from 1994 to 2001 before Troy Aikman and Cris Collinsowrth took over in 2002.
Aikman stayed in the booth until 2021 when Olsen took over.
Brady is signed on a 10-year, $375 million deal with Fox, so he has plenty of time to establish himself as a top talent.
Only time will tell if he can live up to the hype and provide top-tier analysis for anxious football fans.
