UK Youth has teamed up with leading careers company Tempo to help deliver its new pioneering summer jobs programme.

National youth work charity UK Youth has been awarded £1.5 million by the Youth Endowment Fund to set up the summer jobs programme.

The scheme offers paid employment opportunities and highly skilled youth worker support to 600 young people aged 16-24 facing severe disadvantage and at risk of violence in Greater Manchester, the West Midlands and a number of London boroughs.

The scheme offers paid employment opportunities.

The programme will provide young people with direct employment opportunities with employers in their local area. Young people will gain key skills needed to support future employment opportunities along with being paid for the placement. The programme will also review the young person’s wellbeing and mental health, while supporting them with employability and self-confidence.

UK Youth is delighted to partner with hiring platform Tempo on summer jobs. London-based Tempo will deliver the compliance and payroll aspects of the programme.

Thora Eberts, UK Youth director of network delivery, said: “We are excited about partnering with Tempo to deliver summer jobs. Tempo’s expertise will enable our delivery partners and employers to focus their energies on supporting young people to have the best experiences possible during the programme.

“Since 2017, Tempo has helped thousands of people kick start their careers at some of the UK’s most exciting companies. We therefore share a deep commitment to making life better for young people through employment.”

Ben Chatfield, Tempo co-founder and chief executive officer, said: “We’re delighted to be supporting UK Youth in delivering its inaugural Summer Jobs Programme.

“The programme will provide much-needed employment opportunities for young people and we hope our technology can help make the experience both confidence inspiring and rewarding.”

The programme follows a similar project delivered in Illinois, which has seen a drop in violent crime since One Summer Chicago was launched more than a decade ago. OSC brings together government institutions, community organisations and employers to offer employment and internship opportunities to young people.
