After several months of negotiation, the federal government of Nigeria, announced on Monday, that an executive bill on the new minimum wage will be transmitted to the National Assembly, after Presidential Bola Ahmed Tinubu meets with organized labour on Thursday.
This is coming as Nigerians lament the high cost of living in the country and imminent threats of a Nationwide protest over hunger. Reactions have trailed the federal government’s announcement that it has distributed 740 trucks of rice to the 36 states of the federation and the federal capital territory to address the economic hardship in the country.
The minister of information and national orientation, Mohamed Idris made the announcement at the end of the federal executive council meeting on Monday, adding that the president has directed the minister of agriculture, to ensure food availability for Nigerians.
A post on the X account, of the embattled minister, of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, who remains officially suspended, over an alleged N585 million Naira scandal in the ministry, has caused a frenzy on social media.
The post was a screenshot of her condolence message, to the victims of the Jos Building collapse, using the letterhead of the ministry of humanitarian affairs.
The letter has raised more than a few eyebrows, with some suggesting that the minister has been quietly reinstated, bypassing formal processes and public scrutiny. Many Nigerians have condemned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s appointment of a former Lagos State lawmaker, Mojisola-oluwa Alli-Macaulay, as the Executive Director of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund.
Alli-Macaulay represented Amuwo Odofin 1 in Lagos, back in 2020 and was exposed for diverting COVID-19 palliatives meant to alleviate the suffering of poor masses during the COVID-19 lockdown and rebranding the palliatives as her birthday souvenirs. Her appointment has sparked criticisms of the Tinubu administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
A campaign billboard of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his re-election in 2027, has been making the rounds on social media, barely a year in office. On the billboard is a picture of Tinubu holding his wife, Remi, with the inscription Grassroots support for Tinubu 2027.
The billboard, which is said to have been sponsored by a group called “Dark matters” is mounted close to the national stadium in Abuja.
