Nigerian music sensation Tems has emerged as the only Nigerian winner of a conferred category at the 2024 BET Awards which aired live from Los Angeles at 8 pm ET/PT on Sunday (01:00 WAT on Monday).
The 2024 Black Entertainment Television awards ceremony saw the Grammy Award-winner clinch the ‘Best Gospel/Inspirational Song’ category ahead of other legendary gospel musicians with her 2024 release ‘Me & U.’
In a fiercely contested category, Tems triumphed over notable nominees such as Halle Bailey and Kirk Franklin, who were nominated for their works ‘Angel’ and ‘All Things’ respectively. The victory marks another milestone in Tems’ illustrious career, highlighting her growing influence on the global music scene.

Other prominent Nigerian artists including Burna Boy, Asake, Ayra Starr, and Seyi Vibez were also nominated for various categories at the 2024 BET Awards. Despite leading with three nominations for ‘Best New Artiste,’ ‘Best African Act,’ and ‘Best HER,’ Ayra Starr did not secure any wins. Burna Boy was nominated for ‘Best Male Hip Hop Artiste’ and ‘Best Male R&B/POP Artiste’ but did not win either category.
Tems also received a nomination for ‘Best Video Director,’ further highlighting her versatility and talent in the music industry. Davido and Lojay were in the running for the ‘Viewer’s Choice Award’ for their roles in Chris Brown’s ‘Sensational,’ and Asake and Seyi Vibez received nominations for ‘Best International Act’ and ‘Best New International Act’ respectively. However, none of these Nigerian artists were named winners in their respective categories.
The night also saw American veteran musician Usher honoured with the prestigious ‘Lifetime Achievement Award,’ celebrating his enduring contributions to the music industry. The BET Awards continue to recognize and celebrate black entertainers and other minorities in music, film, sports, and philanthropy.
