Heavy rain and a thunderstorm could hit Preston and other areas of the UK this week, according to a new warning from the Met Office.

The warning currently captures much of the UK, including Lancashire as far north as Lancaster, with a note that the exact location of the showers is uncertain and some places will stay dry.

The warning is in place from midday until midnight on Thursday (1 August) and says spray and sudden flooding could cause issues on the road, and for homes and businesses.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “Heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to break out across parts of England and Wales on Thursday afternoon.

“The exact location of showers is still uncertain and some places will stay dry all day. However, where the showers do occur they could be torrential, with the additional hazards of lightning, hail and gusty winds.

“The heaviest showers could result in 20-30 mm within an hour, with 24 hour accumulations possibly reaching as much as 70-90 mm where multiple showers affect the same location.”
