M6 closed in both directions due to serious crash with five taken to hospital

The M6 is closed in both directions after a serious road traffic collision.

The crash, which happened between junction 32 and 33, was first reported by police and the Highways: North West team at around 2pm and the air ambulance is attending the scene.

Police warned that the carriageway is expected to be closed for some time.

A spokesperson for police said: “We received a report of a collision involving one vehicle between junction 32 and 33 of the M6 at around 2pm today.

“A man has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

“Four other people also suffered injuries and have been taken to hospital. The motorway is closed in both directions between junctions 32 and 33 and we will bring you an update when we’re able to.”

Road users are advised to follow the hollow triangle diversion symbols on road signs and allow extra time for their journey.

A spokesperson for Highways: North West said: “Following a serious collision on the M6 southbound in Lancashire a full closure has been implemented from J32 near Galgate to allow emergency services to work at scene. North West Air Ambulance are currently en route and it’s expected that the northbound carriageway will be stopped when they arrive to enable them to land.

“Numerous National Highways Traffic Officers have been dispatched and are en route to assist Lancashire Constabulary, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service and North West Ambulance Service in their response to this collision.”
