The M6 is expected to be closed southbound for some time after a serious crash that left five people in hospital.

Police were called at around 2pm today (22 July) to reports of a one-vehicle collision between junction 32 and 33 on the southbound carriageway.

The motorway was immediately closed by emergency services with Lancashire Fire & Rescue, Lancashire Police and North West Air Ambulance in attendance.

The northbound carriageway had to be closed to allow for the air ambulance to attend the scene.

Five people were taken to hospital as a result of the crash – one of whom who is a man who has suffered serious injuries. Blog Preston understands all five people were in the same vehicle.

Traffic is now moving again on the northbound carriageway but queues are forming as far back as junction 35 on the southbound carriageway. It has been reported by witnesses that some cars have turned around and driven northbound along the southbound hard shoulder.

A spokesperson for police said: “We received a report of a collision involving one vehicle between junction 32 and 33 of the M6 at around 2pm today.

“A man has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

“Four other people also suffered injuries and have been taken to hospital. The motorway is closed in both directions between junctions 32 and 33 and we will bring you an update when we’re able to.”
