An author has written a new book which celebrates the career of Preston-born comedy performer, John Inman.

Gary Wharton, 55 who is Cardiff-based, details the long working life of the television legend, best remembered for his role as Mr Humphries in the 1970s BBC sitcom, ‘Are You Being Served?’

Gary has written similar books celebrating fellow 70s sitcom icon, Richard O’Sullivan, who starred in ‘Man About the House.’

He said: “I wanted to document his work in a fun and interesting way.

“Along with the team that included Mollie Sugden, Wendy Richard and Frank Thornton, as Mr Humphries, John made us all laugh and his catchphrase of “I’m free!” is still remembered today.

“He was such a superb player of comedy but also did a lot of other stuff too. This included numerous pantos as a classic Dame and other telly works.

“I tend to write about people whose work has meant something to me and I hope that people will enjoy the book and discover lots more about this familiar small-screen face who welcomed into our homes.”
