Oside ‘Khoded’ Oluwole has secured his place in gaming history as the new world record holder for the longest video game marathon, which was certified by Guinness World Records (GWR).
The 24-year-old accomplished this extraordinary feat by playing a football video game continuously for 75 hours, from 26 October to 29 October 2023.
Guinness World Records (GWR) officially recognized Oluwole’s achievement in a recent blog post, highlighting his dedication and perseverance throughout the marathon gaming session.
During this marathon gaming exercise, Khoded played Dream League Soccer 2023 on his mobile phone and streamed it on a TV screen; an unconventional approach that set him apart from previous record holders who played FIFA or Pro Evolution Soccer(PES).
“As per our rules for all ‘longest marathon’ records, he accumulated five minutes of rest time after each hour of gaming – only during these breaks could he eat, nap, or use the toilet,”
“Before no one in the past has broken this record by such a large margin as Oside has. It was first set in 2010 with a time of 24 hours and gradually increased to 50 hours after being beaten seven times in 11 years.” GWR said.
Why ‘Khoded’ attempted to break the World Record
The record-breaking exercise saw Khoded surpassing the previous milestone of 50 hours, set by Englishman David Whitefoot in 2022. Throughout this marathon exercise, Khoded played over 500 games, reaching a significant milestone in the competitive gaming arena.
Khoded, undertook this ambitious challenge to raise funds for a local hospital in his hometown of Ijebu-Ode. Reflecting on his achievement, Khoded described the marathon as both challenging and exhilarating.
“It wasn’t an easy task, but I must say it was all fun,” Khoded shared. “I really enjoyed myself playing for 75 hours straight with just some hours of rest.”
“It wasn’t an easy task, but I must say it was all fun.
“It was such a great moment; the event was very interesting and I’m grateful to God that it was successful.” He added
Commenting on Khoded’s accomplishment, Ogun state lawmaker Seun Adesanya praised the gamer’s dedication and skill, hailing him as an inspiration to aspiring gamers across Nigeria.
“Khoded’s achievement stands as a testament to his dedication, determination, and the countless hours of practice he invested in mastering the game,” Adesanya remarked. “His record-breaking feat is an embodiment of the unyielding spirit of determination that drives our nation forward.”
Khoded joins the list of Nigerians to have their name in the Guinness World Records. These include Tunde Onakoya, who broke the record for the longest chess marathon in New York’s Times Square, when he reached the 57-hour mark, Hilda Baci, who broke the World Record for the longest cooking marathon by an individual in May 2023, in the cook-a-thon held in Lagos, Nigeria after cooking for four days.
