The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has said that police officers do get prayers from Nigerians, especially when the officers do their jobs well.

Egbetokun, who described police as the best job in the world, acknowledged that, at times, police get the opposite of prayers from the people.

The police boss who spoke during his two-day working visit to Edo State, said: “Police job is a job you do and people will pray for you. It is also a job you do, and people will give you the opposite of prayer. So, it is you, the policemen, who will decide which one you want.”

The IGP issued a directive to both male personnel and officers within the Edo State Police Command, emphasizing the importance of maintaining transparency and honesty in their interactions with the public.

Furthermore, he called upon these officers to strive for excellence in their service, to dedicate themselves fully to serving the populace with integrity and to uphold the highest standards of public trust.

Egbetokun, who highlighted that the Nigeria Police Force has recently been recognized as the most improved agency in anti-corruption efforts in the country, attributed this achievement to the officers’ engagement with the new policing vision.

This vision, he said, focuses on the professional competence and service-oriented nature of the police force, in line with the rule of law and a commitment to being people-friendly.

Egbetokun also encouraged officers of the Edo State Command to remain dedicated to delivering exceptional service in their roles towards the public.

He also reassured them of the Federal Government’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of police personnel.

He said: “The Federal Government is committed to improve police welfare and we are also doing our best to ensure that policemen have improved welfare.

“Recently, we launched the police housing scheme. The intention of having a police housing scheme is to provide affordable housing to all police officers across the ranks.

“With what we have in place and what we are putting together, houses would be affordable for all police officers, such that you cannot serve the police for 35 years, retire and not have a home.

“That is what we are working on and we are getting support from the Federal Government. This is to show you that the government and the police administration are committed to improving welfare for all police officers.”
