The National Population Commission (NPC) has announced its readiness to conduct a population and housing census, pending approval from President Bola Tinubu.
The NPC Federal Commissioner in Lagos State, Mrs Saidat Oladunjoye, made this known on Thursday during an event commemorating this year’s World Population Day.
The Federal Government, under former President Muhammadu Buhari, had initially scheduled the population census for May 3 to May 7, 2023.
A budget of ₦200 billion was allocated for the exercise. However, the census was postponed, with Buhari stating that the responsibility would fall to his successor, President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking at the event, Mrs Oladunjoye emphasized the commission’s readiness to undertake the census as soon as it receives the green light from President Tinubu.
“We are fully prepared and just waiting for the President’s go-ahead to commence the population and housing census,” she stated.
Mrs Oladunjoye highlighted the significance of conducting an accurate and comprehensive census, noting that it is essential for national planning and development. She urged stakeholders to support the NPC in its efforts to ensure a successful exercise.
The postponement of the census by former President Buhari was aimed at ensuring that the exercise would be carried out effectively under the new administration.
Buhari had expressed confidence that Tinubu would oversee the process and ensure it is conducted efficiently.
She said, “Nobody knows the exact population of Nigeria at the moment. The last census was held nearly two decades ago, and the date for the next census depends on the President. We have made all the necessary preparations.
“We are only waiting for the President’s go-ahead. I can tell you categorically that we are ready for the census. The census is going to hold anytime soon. We’re waiting for the President to give us the proclamation. We are ready for it.”
