Marcin Romanowski, a former deputy minister of justice, was detained by Poland’s security service Monday under a probe for misuse of public money.
According to prosecutors, Romanowski is being charged with 11 crimes including exceeding his powers and causing damage to the state treasury to achieve personal and financial benefits.
Romanowski, a member of the far-right Sovereign Poland, held the post of deputy justice minister in Poland from 2019 until December 2023.
The arrest was first announced by Romanowski’s attorney in a post on X and was later confirmed by the National Prosecutor’s Office in a statement.
Former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said Romanowski’s arrest was “an attempt to intimidate the opposition” and “a strictly political action.”
The stripping of Romanowski and others’ parliamentary immunity paves the way for prosecutors to investigate any wrongdoing under the previous administration.
