President Bola Tinubu has renamed the National Theatre in Lagos after Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka.

The decision is ahead of Soyinka’s 90th birthday on Saturday, July 13, marking an acknowledgement of his contributions to African literature and advocacy for human rights.

In a heartfelt birthday message to Soyinka on Friday, July 12, 2024, President Tinubu emphasized the significance of honouring the first African Nobel Literature Prize winner, whose literary works have not only shaped the landscape but also championed the values of dignity and justice.

“We celebrate this national treasure while he is still with us,” President Tinubu expressed, adding, “I am delighted to announce the decision of the Federal Government to rename the National Theatre in Iganmu, Surulere, as the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts.”

Reflecting on Soyinka’s enduring legacy, President Tinubu highlighted his resilience in overcoming challenges, including a battle with prostate cancer. He praised his unyielding commitment to using literature and activism to confront oppression globally.

Acknowledging Soyinka’s pivotal role in Nigeria’s struggle for democracy, President Tinubu recalled their shared efforts during the fight to validate the June 12, 1993, presidential election, emphasizing Soyinka’s bravery and influence in encouraging opposition against the military dictatorship.

He also acknowledged Professor Soyinka, as the first African to win the Nobel Literature Prize in 1986, saying he deserves all the accolades as he marks the milestone of 90 years on earth. About the National Theatre

The National Theatre, Nigeria is the primary centre for the performing arts in Nigeria. The monument is located in Iganmu, Surulere, Lagos. Its construction was completed in 1976 in preparation for the Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC) in 1977.
